Remember when the Rockford Rally seemed really far away on the calendar? Well, it’s less than a month away. Here’s the latest. If this rally isn’t fun, nothing is.
Month: June 2003
TBS Amerivespa footage
From 32: The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum, host of Amerivespa, has posted the TBS Amerivespa segment that was broadcast during “Dumb and Dumber” last week. Nicely done, funny, and only one glaring factual error.
What’s this country coming toOe
when a young man can’t ride a motorcycle over 100mph through yards and stoplights, without being unfairly chased by racist police?
My Scooter Whines: Radiohead Vespa
E*rock has tipped us off that Filter Magazine, Diesel Clothing, Capitol Records and Vespa are giving away a Radiohead “Hail to the Thief” Vespa. That album cover is really cool, hopefully the scooter will look something like the photoshop job on the site.
Squadra Corse at Gateway
|
‘Squadra Corsea 2SB had another strong showing at Gateway International Raceway in St Louis this weekend. Stock class winners (above) were Mykrrr (2SB, asleep), 2nd place; Ryan Bastianelli (Moped Hospital, shirtless), 1st place, and Michael Durso (2SB, kneeling), 3rd place. Matt Devries, in the tradition of 2SB, failed to place. I dunno who won stock because no one ever posts the stats on the MASS list until a month later.
The other United
Our soccer correspondent sent us this gem from MLS Public Relations’ weekly quote sheet:
SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2003
D.C. UNITED 3, COLUMBUS CREW 0
D.C UNITED HEAD COACH RAY HUDSON on individual performances:
“(Marco) Etcheverry: huge heart … (Ali) Curtis:
superlative … (Mike) Petke: magic. If you don’t see the class in (Galin) Ivanov, then you’re
as blind as Stevie Wonder locked in a vault. He plays with such poise and class. He plays on a different planet.”
They left this quote off the list: “That could well be his last game played on planet Earth, I wanted to give Stoitchkov this game. He’d earned it.” That’s right, the 37-year-old Bulgarian star of the ’94 World Cup, Barçelona, and the Chicago Fire is likely to be cut from DC United any day now, unless his green card comes through or another foreign player is injured.
Tennessee: Red Light District
Jedi Chad has actually found the only good reason to move to Tennessee. (OK, Nashville is pretty cool, too.)
Guided by Voices rocks us
Here’s the original version of GBV’s Sensational Gravity Boy. (the better-known version with Kim Deal was attributed to “Freedom Cruise” and appeared on the Ret Hot and Bothered AIDS charity EP.) Courtesy of the extensive Guided By Voices Official Web Site.
Stanley Cup
OK, I haven’t found a song for today yet (I was trying to find “Tunes Splits the Atom” by MC Tunes…) but let me just say that New Jersey sucks. What was up with their fans booing Giguere and cheering Springsteen and Bon Jovi? The Devils totally deserved to win, though, they played really well. They’ve won the same number of cups in the last decade as the Blackhawks won in 76 years. The loss kinda put it in perspective that I WAS CHEERING FOR THE DUCKS! How did that happen?
Chicago Parking Medallions
From Christian: “Thought I’d pass this on: You can now renew your city medallion or buy one for a new registered vehicle online. You need your plate number, driver’s license number, and a credit card. They only charge you $1 extra for online purchase, it beats standing in line or paying the Currency Exchange fees.” Let me add that the deadline is June 30 and it takes 15 days to mail them, so do it now. They’ve already been cracking down this year, Soldier Field and Millenium Park are way over budget.
Love’s Happening/Delilah’s scooter meet
OK, I was confused, the Scooter Meet at Delilah’s at 1pm this Saturday is still on, but the motorcycle guys aren’t coming. There are prizes, a ride, and a free pint of Two Brothers for anyone who rides. There’s also a Mod Garage sale (music/clothes) at noon. It’s part of ModChicago’s Our Way of Thinking 2: Love’s Happening music festival.
Wildcat 100
Lee Stromberg has invited scooterists to participate in the Wildcat 100, a 100-mile ride for motorcycles and scooters under 100cc. The ride is September 7 at Wildcat Mountain State Park near Ontario, Wisconsin, which is between Chicago and Minneapolis. Now I gotta find a Bridgestone 90 and get it running by then, that sounds like fun! Christian should take his SS90 and win another goddamn trophy.
MLS Competition, National Team Confusion
Whenever one season starts and before the other one begins, there is a time where the footie fan will have to turn their attention to other things. Gardening, for example, is a wonderful, albeit boring pursuit in the summer. Or even rebuilding a scooter, though you should really have that done by the time Niagara rolls around. For us here in the United States, we are somewhat lucky that we have MLS to keep us sane soccer fans until the next Premier League, Serie A, La Liga or Deutsche Bundesliga season.

Paul Westerberg Rocks Us
I always really dug the Replacements, but after their last couple crappy albums, I never paid too much attention to Paul Westerberg’s solo material until recently. I was missing out, almost every song he’s done since the ‘Mats is incredible, some would say better. David Lucash found a good place to start catching up, though it’s mostly live stuff.
Midwest Rally Weekend
Well, it finally happened, two rallies, one state apart, on the same weekend. Over in Cleveland, POC Phil’s first rally has apparently grown into a huge vintage motorcycle festival, while the Scoots of Hazzard in Indiana promises to be a more intimate drunken camping affair. 2sb hears that the cool-raffle-prize-per-attendee ratio is a lot better in Indiana, but we’re skipping both for a weekend to come off our bacon high.
