[...] Almost exactly one year ago today, DiamoUSA announced they were bringing Italjet scooters to the U.S. (Our January 9, 2007 interview with Mathu Solo is here). A year has passed and no visible progress has been made, other than a few mysterious (and probably Asian-made) Torpedos (a model not even currently listed on [...]

They are being at least questionably vague with the suggestion that the Griffon just MAY be made by hyosung. It IS a redressed Hyosung GT650. This bike is already sold in the US by UM motors as the V2S-650 and it was announced several days ago that the same bike with the sport faring will be fielded in several race series this year by a team run by a shop in California (presumably a UM dealer). This bike is also very similar to the suzuki SV650. Hyosung also has a copy of the classic Suzuki GS500 in smaller displacements. The Griffon is clearly a nicer design, has spoke wheels but clearly it's the same chassis, suspension and motor as the Hyosung Suzuki clone.

What does that mean about the veracity of the rest of their response? I don't know. Does UM have any recourse regarding another company selling essentially the same motorcycle? Who knows. That would likely come down to S. Korean contract law. Why would Piaggio supply motors to them? Because Piaggio likes to make money (and are probably a creditor the company from it's last incarnation, but that's just a guess at a motive). Could Italjet set up a parts supply from China to make frames in a matter of months? Of course. Look at the Xkeleton Trickster. That hit the US shores faster than the real deal. Can the Italian government want to take a few people off the list of the unemployed (a number higher than average in the Euro zone and a sore spot for some) and help out with some financing? It hasn't been unheard of. Does Diamo position themselves well as just an importer and being allowed to just blame Italjet for not delivering if things never materialize? Surely. Can I ask and answer another question. On this topic I'm fresh out at the moment other than "will we see something on two wheels in Indy?".

I won't even mention my own conspiracy theories.
