Scooter Press features “Vespa 60” customs and Kymco 2007 models

The new edition of Rubbermag‘s spinoff site Scooter Press features a vague-ish story (with photos) on Piaggio’s Vespa GT60 and LX60 custom scooters, on display at the Milan motorcycle show. Also featured is a handy rundown of Kymco’s 2007 (already?) product line, featuring 8 new scooters. We’re jetlagged and phoning it in tonight, re-writing re-written press releases. Can you tell? Kymco does have some neat new stuff, though, check it out.

  1. I actually think the restyling of the Kymco People models is for the better, I hated the old design and it was hardly “retro,” looked like a gangly teenager at “that awkward phase” to me. I considered it possibly the ugliest scooter on the market and couldn’t believe that it sold so well, but I guess it was the only thing like it on the market in that price range. Now it looks more robust and the tire size finally seems to make sense with the bodywork.

The special edition Vespas on the other hand, I am not a fan of. I hate modern bikes with the exposed bicycle-style handlebars and bulbous, weird speedos and halfhearted windscreens, it was my least-favorite visual design element about the Honda Metropolitan, the Vino, etc. And what’s with the digital AND analog readouts, they’re totally at odds w/ each other. The rest of it I could take or leave, but the headset area is very ugly, IMO.

  2. I agree, the old Peoples were the weak link, design-wise, of the Kymco family. Vintage is great, Retro is not.

The special editions are fairly silly, but as far as i can tell they’re just custom-made, so it’s not like we’ll have to see them all over.
