The other United

Our soccer correspondent sent us this gem from MLS Public Relations’ weekly quote sheet:

SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2003
D.C. UNITED 3, COLUMBUS CREW 0

D.C UNITED HEAD COACH RAY HUDSON on individual performances:
“(Marco) Etcheverry: huge heart … (Ali) Curtis:
superlative … (Mike) Petke: magic. If you don’t see the class in (Galin) Ivanov, then you’re
as blind as Stevie Wonder locked in a vault. He plays with such poise and class. He plays on a different planet.”

They left this quote off the list: “That could well be his last game played on planet Earth, I wanted to give Stoitchkov this game. He’d earned it.” That’s right, the 37-year-old Bulgarian star of the ’94 World Cup, Barçelona, and the Chicago Fire is likely to be cut from DC United any day now, unless his green card comes through or another foreign player is injured.
