POCphil on the CF Moto V5

CFMOTO V5 side

Our good friend Phil Waters of Pride of Cleveland Scooters (POC) sent us his impressions of a CF Moto/Baron V5, a 250cc automatic motorcycle, that came into his shop for service:

“First it’s a candy, then it’s a gum!”

This doesn’t seem to work as well with automatic motorcycles. What Honda did so well with the Hondamatic 30 years ago is being re-introduced by the Chinese, in a typically Chinese fashion.

The CF Moto V5 is currently being distributed by Big Jim’s Wholesale, who has recently taken on the more scooter-friendly name of TwinCityScooters.com.

We’ve been considering bringing them in as a line here at POC and talked to their reps at Indy. Their bikes had intrigued me, but I was skeptical about the quality.

Child Riding Belts

I’ve ridden up and down the alley a couple times with Milena precariously set upon the floorboards of my Vespa, but I look forward to the day I can take her for a real ride. While toddlers riding as passengers on motorcycles is a way of life in many countries, it’s a bit frowned upon in the U.S. Now, thanks to the Child Riding Belt (Invented, obviously, in Canada, and clearly labeled as “not a safety device”) I’ll be able to tote her around as soon as I can find a helmet that fits. Or maybe not. Thanks for the link, Mad Man Maddox.

Open track day at Norway

Ryan tells us there will be an open trackday this Saturday (July 8, 2006) at Norway Kart Track (the map looks vague, but you’ll see it). The track opens at 9am, and $30 buys you track time all day for scooters, pocketbikes, motards, and such. Safety wire is not required, but lights must be taped over. This is a perfect opportunity to try your bike out on a track.

Mods vs. Rockers recap

2sb didn’t represent at Mods vs. Rockers but these two posts on CHIscooterList probably sum it up pretty well:

Patrick:

MvsR Chicago kicked ass. How many friggin bikes were there? Iit looked like 300 at least.

Ryan:

While we were on LSD I rode upto this guy on an ’80s BMW who everybody was following. I said to the guy “Where are we going?” and he said “Im just driving home from work,” and he looks back to see 100 bikes behind him.

Mods vs. Rockers

Mods vs. RockersSorry, I thought I’d posted this earlier, but I hadn’t: This Saturday (June 17 2006) is the Ton-Up Club’s annual Mods vs. Rockers motorcycle and scooter show and ride at Delilah’s. They’ve ramped it up a notch this year and added a dinner at Delilahs and an “afterparty” at Liar’s Club at 10pm, along with a DJ, a band and more. If you didn’t get a chance to throw any deckchairs at the ModChicago party two weeks ago, now’s your chance. Now to decide: should you take the Triumph or the Lambretta?

Ben Roethlisberger: Too cool for a helmet

This screenshot from ESPN is funny, but riding without a helmet is not. Especially if you have a multimillion-dollar sports contract that prohibits riding a motorcycle, and your coach has already bawled you out for riding without a helmet. I’m sure once he heals, the Bears will pick him up, Kordell-style, and pay him a few million bucks to play three exhibition games and then get injured or busted for drunk driving or some other vast act of lameness that I can’t even conceive right now. (Thanks Steve for this and the last link)

Meet a Motorcyclist

In honor of Motorcycle Awareness Month (May), Ducati Riders of Illinois (DRILL) is sponsoring a “Meet a Motorcyclist” event at noon this Saturday (5-13-06) in the parking lot of Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL. They’re encouraging well-mannered two-wheelers to come out and show the public we’re not ALL the scourge of the earth (i.e. stockbrokers with new Harleys). Thanks for the tip, Janaki. (Event cancelled on 5/11/06)
