2sb may not be the brightest or most knowlegeable scooter blog out there, but we like to think that with our Google News subscriptions and unhealthy amount of scooter site surfing, we more or less have our finger on the pulse of scootering. So imagine my surprise when i noticed out of the corner of my eye a tiny blurb in the corner of Finkbuilt (of all places) that Vespa had announced a hybrid Diesel/Electric GTS for 2007. The link took me to the Vespa GTS site in italian, on which I couldn’t make out anything about a hybrid model. I excitedly drooled all over my keyboard looking for info, but sadly eventually figured out it was a cruel April Fools’ joke from RetroThing that many other blogs had picked up. Reading the actual story, it’s clear it’s a joke (3-stroke!?) but that link sure had me going for a while.

Honda UK’s “My First License”
In another example of how the British motorcycle industry kicks the American motorcycle industry’s ass, Honda UK is offering “license classesâ€? for 5-11-year olds at local bike shows. The licenses aren’t valid, of course, but the program delivers a message about safety and responsibility to british kids (along with Honda’s sales message) at an age when their American counterparts are riding dirt bikes without helmets on their uncle’s farm.
Yamaha UK offers free insurance with two scooter models
Yamaha Motor UK is offering free liability insurance on its Aerox 50 and Cygnus-X 125 scooters. The insurance covers up to three family members and comprehensive insurance is available for a very reasonable upgrade fee. The scooters also include 1 year of RAC coverage (the UK’s AAA equivalent) and Datatag anti-theft markings installed.
Scoot Commute 2006
Scooter Rider Magazine is celebrating their second anniversary, and its editor, BJ Strass, is taking his second transcontinental “Scoot Commute” to promote scooter travel and safety. The ride will include several stops to meet with media and scooterists.
V-Twin Battery Tender
I was going to make fun of this until I realized if they made a scooter version, i’d probably buy it. Link courtesy of the official yarn merchant of 2sb.
Ride for Engerland
Piaggio UK is offering a special Piaggio NRG Power 50 done up in England colors. If you plan to ride it to Germany for the World Cup, you might want to invest in a good, opaque cover. In other news, the new “Italia” model Bonneville is now available on triumph.it.
Motorist Shoots, Kills Biker
A motorist in Connecticut shot at a group of Hell’s Angels bikers on Sunday, striking one and killing another. Police are investigating motives, including road rage.
Cincinnati Enquirer on WKRP
“Gay. Straight. We’ve got it all!” Here’s the fairly-decent-for-major-news-media local story on the WKRP rally. I’ll post some photos and anecdotes tonight. We managed to miss most of it, but we had a great time Saturday night. Thanks Leslie, Casey, and all you other XYLs.

Quadrophenia heading for the stage
First there was ABBA’s “Mamma Mia”, then Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” We even have the “Boney M” musical arriving in London’s West End later this year.
However, pretty soon it looks like we will have The Who’s Quadrophenia made into an on stage musical as well.
I wonder if they will have the scooters riding around on the stage?
(note: we just realized the linked story was from 2001… oh well.)

Thanks to Ryetronics for the story.
TomTom scooter GPS
If you’ve got a $900 tax refund coming and hate getting lost, the TomTom Rider motorcycle/scooter navigation system looks pretty fantastic. Alwaysblog seemed to really like it, from what i can make out (“Rider” in italian is “to laugh,” ha.) It’d be especially fun to use on a old Vespa, where you need four hands as it is for throttling, braking, shifting, signalling, and holding your 30-pack of Old Style in place.
Scooter Magazines
Carssuck.de‘s multifarious and nifty scooter magazine collection. One of those looks familiar.
Progressive publishes motorcycle accident/theft stats
Last month, Progressive Insurance published a list of collision and theft statistics for 89 metropolitan areas. Chicago surprisingly placed slightly below the national average on both charts, 64th (of 89) “most likely” for collision, and 52nd (of 89) for theft. Just don’t let your bike out of your site in Honolulu, where theft is 4.28 times more likely than the national average. Thanks for the tip, Vespaway.
Vroom with a View
I posted about travel writer Peter Moore’s book Vroom with a View before it came out in America (it’s now under $10 at Amazon), but Nitro reminds us that Peter’s Vroom with a View website has some neat stuff, including a gallery of photos from the trip.
