Robert Volz posted a conversation with “new lambretta” designer Jeffrey Smith on the International Scooterist BBS. Smith didn’t give much away, but it’s a start. Meanwhile, across the scootering world, the rumors and innuendo fly regarding the distributor and the manufacturer.

One interesting argument is whether or not Lambretta International actually owns the name “Lambretta.” Smith reports the name was bought from famous english collector Nigel Cox, but, as John Stafford pointed out on the BBS, Lambretta Clothing Inc owns (at least) the UK rights to clothing with the Lambretta name, which they bought from Scooters India Limited, the most recent manufacturer of the Lambretta scooter. Unless Cox quietly bought the name from SIL, it’s unclear why he’d have the authority to license it to foreign entities. On the other hand, Smith could be misinformed or mistaken. One thing is very clear, Lambretta enthusiasts are going to be pretty upset if the product doesn’t live up to the name.
